Do you need to detox?

It’s a new year, which can only mean one thing: a new you. And what’s the best way to start off any transformation? A detox, of course. But I’m not talking your food-restricting, juice-drinking, bowel-movement-improving type of detox. I’m talking about a beauty detox. A way to get your hair, skin, body and all things beauty, ready for a fresh new year…
HAIR
Why it needs a detox
From shine serums and hairspray to your everyday shampoo and conditioner, your hair withstands a lot of product use over the year, which results in a fair bit of build-up. This can cause hair to become thinner and slow the growth process.
How to detox
Use a clarifying shampoo like Shu Uemura Art of Hair Clarifying Astringent Cleanser Cleansing Oil Shampoo or Fudge Detox Cleanser Shampoo, once a week.
SKIN
Why it needs a detox
It takes a lot of foundation, bronzer and highlighter to get that sun-kissed look just right, so it’s no surprise that your skin might be in need of a good clean. Plus all that perspiration from the summer heat can cause sebum build-up in your pores, which can lead to breakouts and oily skin.
How to detox
A clay mask like KORA Organics Clay Purifying Mask will help to draw out any impurities, leaving your skin refreshed and renewed. Combine this with a thorough cleanse using a brush like Skin Physics Derma Sonic Cleansing Brush and your skin will be as good as new.
BODY
Why it needs a detox
Self-tan, moisturiser, body wash, body shimmer – the list goes on. Once again your product usage can cause a lot of build-up, leading to clogged pores. And after all your hair-free, silky-smooth efforts, the last thing you want is ingrown hairs ruining your summer fun.
How to detox
Use an exfoliating scrub like Organi Salt Scrub or Jurlique Perfectly Polished Body Scrub once or twice a week to remove any product build-up and dead skin cells.
MAKE-UP
Why it needs a detox
If you tend to be a bit of a hoarder when it comes to your make-up bag, you may be carrying around a lot of bacteria from products well passed their used by date. Make-up brushes can also carry leftover product, which you would then be transferring to your skin.
How to detox
Sort through your products and dispose of the ones that are too old. A rough time line is six to eight months for foundation, a year for face powder and blush, six months for liquid eyeliner and mascara and two years for lipstick. Depending on use, you should also be washing your make-up brushes at least once a month.
Are you in need of a beauty detox? How do you like to start off the new year?

I've heard about clarifying shampoos but always been a little scared to try them in case it strips out my colour, perhaps I'll give it a go. I regularly 'detox' my face with a mask and I can definitely feel the difference. I do it on a Sunday night so I always start the week fresh and get rid of whatever the weekend was. Same goes for my body, it gets a good scrub Sunday night then a nice lather of body butter.

Great article. However as a daily makeup brush user I would recommend that at a minimum you should spot clean your brushes after every use and do a deep clean with a baby shampoo weekly or fortnightly.

I cleaned out my make up and skin care and gave away what i will never use, separated in categories the things i will use and threw out what was no good to give away. It felt so liberating and gave me a better idea of the amount I really do have lol
I have a body mud mask my Mum got me from the Dead Sea in Egypt when she was there, i really should give that a go!! EVen though it seems like it would be a pain to apply!

nice to see some detox tip for hair and skin, normally detoxes tend to focus on your insides

That's what I was thinking, I think detox and automatically think a green tea to fix my insides. So am now enlightened after reading this that I have a whole to more to detox, especially my hair.
