How-to: get fit on the cheap
Are you suffering from the post-Christmas pudge? Is your wallet the only thing feeling a little lighter than it did before Christmas?
Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Many of us find ourselves in the same pickle once the silly season has come and gone. A few extra inches around our middle have us determined to try and get back into shape, but we just don’t have the money to join a gym or take on a personal trainer so soon after Christmas.
If only there was a way we could try and tighten up without blowing all of our cash? Oh there is? Why didn’t you say so!
TRICK TO GET FIT ON THE CHEAP #1: Swimming
Not only does swimming help to increase cardiovascular capacity and develop core body strength (which will assist you with any other exercise you take part in), it also helps to create lean muscle and can help to ‘up’ your endurance. It’s a little known fact that swimmers can swim for longer than other people can train in sports such as running or cycling. This means more calories can be burned through swimming laps. The best part? Most local pools are free to visit, or require only a couple of dollars entry fee.
TRICK TO GET FIT ON THE CHEAP #2: Skipping rope/hula hoop
We’ve talked about how hula hooping helps to whittle down your waist, but did you know that along with skipping rope, hula hooping is also a really effective way to burn calories, too?
Yep! The games you used to play as a child are actually very beneficial when it comes to treating your waistline. Both hula hoops and skipping ropes work to get your heart rate up so you’re burning calories and toning your muscles, too. Better still; if you pass over a $20 note at a fitness or game shop, you’ll get change.
TRICK TO GET FIT ON THE CHEAP #3: Taking the stairs
Oh no, I don’t just mean choosing the stairs over the elevator. I mean making your very own step machine and testing your endurance wherever you find a large set of stairs. What’s great about climbing stairs is the cardiovascular benefits – what better weight is there to use than your own body? You’ll find that soon after you start, your heart begins to beat faster and your body uses more oxygen, which helps to burn calories. It’s also costs nothing, zilch, zero – and requires no specific skills or training. Yippee!
