Is your soap stripping your skin?

Are you using a soap that’s actually doing more harm than good to your skin? Your proof is in the paper – the litmus paper that is!
We decided to do some scientific testing of our own and put a few well-known body and face cleansers up against washing detergent to find out just how gentle (or harsh!) they are for your skin. Guaranteed you’ll be surprised by the results.
Watch on above to find out which soaps are skin strippers, and which are skin saviours…
Dove Beauty Cream Bar
Various other soaps (which names shall remain nameless!)
Are you surprised by the results of our litmus test? Has it changed your views on soaps?
Have you tried any of the products mentioned above?

I'm not particularly surprised by the soaps testing so alkaline. I don't use soap for that reason. I would love to see a similar test with face and also body washes. I use Dove 2 in 1 foaming face wash so I assume it would be reasonably neutral just like the bar.

I have fond a change in my regular soap of a leading brand recently, breaking out in a dry rash. Swapped to body wash and havn't had issues since

I can't use soaps without my skin reacting badly. I use sodium laurel sulfate free soaps such as Moo Goo :)

I'm not suprised at all. A lot of products in western society are poorly made.

I've never liked the idea of using soap as it doesnt take a scientist to feel how drying they are! I use the Dove Beauty bar or a body wash :)

I don't use soap bars at all. Interesting facts but would have loved to know what the other brands are, otherwise feels a bit biased :)

Very interesting video. I use a moisturising body wash which should be better than soap.

Excellent video demo Deb.. a bit scary is'nt it. As you say "You would'nt wash your face in detergent" but many people may be doing just that, totally unaware of the damage that they are doing to their skin.

Doesn't surprise me at all. You can feel how drying and horrible soaps are just by washing your hands with them. Dove is the ONLY soap that comes anywhere near my body

Hasn't really changed my views on soaps, I tend to use a cotton-off cream cleanser like Clarins and then use a gentle facial scrub.

Thanks for pointing this out, Deb. Too many facts get lost in hype. To whit: soap is naturally alkaline. Most soaps contain the some ingredients as detergents and body washes. Soap is supposed to strip the skin's oils - the usual way to get rid of the microbes that feed on them.

The cold hard facts! Yikes! I'm going to have to get a pack of that litmus paper strips so I can start testing everything around here! Hand me the goggles!.....

Thanks Dr Deb! Very interesting video - Ãt's a worry what we've been putting on our skin's all this time! Dove is obviously not a bad choice for sensitive skins.

Well now I know why I gave soap the flick several years ago. Having said that I'd love to see you do a test on some body washes & cleansers please Deb :-) Well done Dove. Love your scientific outfit by the way...
