Yvette Luciano's survival story
My treatment was the challenge of a lifetime. As a 29 year-old who had never even been in hospital before, a whole year of surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation and ongoing scans and follow-ups was intense. My hospital became my 2nd home and I spent more time with my oncologists and nurses than my friends. After finding the lump on my honeymoon, my new husband immediately became my carer - not quite the hot first year of marriage we all hope for.
I was so unwell that even when I was home, I just spent most of my time curled up in bed reading lots of nutrition, health and spirituality books. That really helped me feel empowered and ready for my new life of health and wellness.
I also forced myself to juice as much as possible – at least one big green juice every single day. I absolutely believe it helped nourish me and is now a non-negotiable part of my life.
Like a lot of young people facing cancer, I delved deeply into the spiritual world. I also found other cancer thrivers around the world and visualised myself becoming one of them. In my darkest days though, my husband and my family were my focus. They have consistently remained positive which really helped, I refused to let them down. I was also really inspired by my belief that everything happens for a reason, and that I would use my experience as a positive for other young women. That's why I studied holistic health coaching and what inspires me now to coach others through their treatments and to become thrivers.
It's a cliché - but I really believe it was a gift. It's taught me about self-love and all about how miraculous our bodies are. I've also learnt about forgiveness and letting things go. I'm a much happier and healthier person now than ever before. I appreciate and enjoy such simple things in life and treat my body and mind with love and respect. Friday nights used to be partying all night and nursing a hangover the next day. Now I love nothing more than a night in with my favourite people and some delicious healthy food, or even just a peaceful jog on the beach by myself feels like heaven on earth.
My favourite quote is 'Your permission to heal is greater than anyone has let you believe'. Never give up on yourself and always treat yourself with extreme love and self-care. Your hair will grow back, your body will heal and you will live a life beyond your wildest dreams. Trust your intuition, find doctors and healers you have complete faith in, learn some meditation or stress relieving practices, get a counsellor or coach you really connect with, and eat (and drink) your greens.
