Your ticket to healthy hair and nails
I have heard so much about vitamins and supplements over the years. Thankfully I’m light-years away from the days when I thought vitamins and supplements were reserved solely for hefty Jersey Shore-like fellows that wanted to ‘pump ze iron’ and ‘build up ze guns, man!’
I now know that there is a reason that people (like Bh’s Kate) cart around a weekly pill case filled to the brim with different vitamins. It’s because supplements are a good way of looking after our health and wellbeing by assisting us to reach our Recommended Daily Intake (or RDI) of various minerals and nutrients that are otherwise somewhat difficult to cram into just one day – and just three main meals.
So, I took my question to the people, our knowledgeable beauties, who definitely taught me a thing or two on the benefits of vitamins, and what I’m missing out on!
Within a minute of asking the question, we had members suggesting:
Acai and zinc supplements – if you tend to break out.
Vitamin D – essential if you want to up your calcium absorption (which benefits our bones, teeth, nails and hair.)
Iron – great for women, due to loss of blood (you know, at that time of the month)
However, the best healthy eating tip I picked up was from bh member Beck, a student practitioner in Nutrition, who advised that the ticket to healthier hair and nails is protein! Our hair, nails and skin are made from protein so it’s important to maintain the body’s protein levels. Protein also stabilizes blood sugar, regulating energy throughout the day and assisting in maintaining a balanced weight! So next time you reach for a snack, make sure it’s a protein-rich one like a peanut butter sandwich, a glass of chilled milk or a handful of raw nuts and seeds.
Some great supplement suggestions are:
Nature's Own Amino Acid Chelated Zinc
Nature's Own Calcium & Magnesium with vitamin D3
