Do you know your supermarket etiquette?

We don’t blink when it comes to trying on a dress before deciding whether or not to buy it, but what’s your stance on sampling a grape at the supermarket?
Is that wrong? Are we stealing?
New research conducted by haircare brand Herbal Essences says Aussie women are divided about what’s acceptable behaviour when shopping at your local Coles, Woolworths or Aldi. They discovered almost one million women across our country are confused about what constitutes acceptable supermarket etiquette, with 80 per cent of those surveyed apprehensive about opening a beauty product like shampoo or conditioner to smell it first.
In a bid to educate women about what is ‘good’ and ‘bad’ supermarket behaviour, Herbal Essences is encouraging shoppers to ‘Crack the Cap’ and smell the ‘scents you can’t forget’ before adding them to your trolley.
Herbal Essences spokesperson Eunice Tan says they want “Aussies to feel liberated to ‘Crack the Cap’ before buying their shampoo and conditioner, and really explore and discover the right scents for them.” She also advises that customers “crack the cap responsibly”.
So the next time you’re in the beauty aisle of your local supermarket, don’t be afraid to try before you buy.
What’s your stance on supermarket etiquette? Do you test any products before buying them?

LOL, I ALWAYS smell something before I purchase it to see the smell! Ofcourse it is is sealed I wouldn't, but most of the time someone else has already done it so its there to smell :)

Never really thought of testing it this way, maybe the companies should put testers out for customers to sample? Rather than opening a product for sale.

I'm big on fragrance so I smell everything when possible - it could make or break the product. I don't eat the fruits & veggies. I feel like feeling and looking at them is enough. What I can't stand is people who actually eat/drink stuff off the shelf, then chuck the rubbish back onto the shelf before walking to checkout. You didn't pay for that! The supermarket doesn't provide that incentive for you to eat whatever you want while you shop!

I'll give things a sniff if possible but I would never open a seal.

I've never tested shampoo and conditioner but I have sampled a few grapes.

If it is sealed I will not open it however if it is a shampoo/conditioner I will click the lid to smell it, fruit and veg I will touch to feel the freshness. I don't mess around with products, its just rude and the company needs to then sell that tampered with product. I would be livid if someone broke something I needed to then sell so I try to be respectful

I never ever open things that are sealed - there would be nothing worse than someone buying an open product - I would be fuming ...Fruit on the other hand - yes I have been known to pick a grape or so - thank fully our fruit guy has samples and is happy to break something open for us to try - my daughter gets her fruit requirements for the day when we go shopping hahah

I have to admit to flipping the occasional lid to sniff - but if I buy it, I'll reach for one at the back!
I do prefer to buy products that are sealed to ensure no one has contaminated them!

I'm really naughty, I smell everything before I buy, I get headaches from certain scents - I don't break a seal or anything and if I can't sniff without breaking into the packaging then I don't buy

Same, I just flip the lid to smell the scent. Never open the product or the seals.

I usually open the lids of shower gels to smell them first and see what I like best. I don't really do this with shampoos and conditioners, but then I usually stick with Herbal Essences myself and I love the scents of their products. I purchased an Impulse body spray the other day and purchased a different one cos they didn't have the one I usually get and I didn't try it because I didn't want to spray it and couldn't smell anything from smelling the cap. I wish I had sprayed it now, although I would have felt guilty, cos I quite dislike the scent! I'll still use it up but I won't purchase that scent again.

It has never crossed my mine to "try before buy" in a supermarket, maybe I should :)

No, I never open anything in the supermarkets, that's a no no to me. If I want to check out a product I prefer to go to Priceline or Big W or somewhere that has the testers to smell. Or Beauty Heaven reviews is a good place to start where members comment on the scent, overpowering or pleasant. It is wrong to use a product in the aisles, someone else will buy that. I don't want to pick up something someone else has already been sniffing and using. Maybe one grape is ok, but nothing else. Some people really do have a hide the way they sample things.

Shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hand wash. YES! I get migraines, sometimes I'm unsure about products. I'll even unscrew a squirt top from liquid cleaning products sometimes.
No spraying, squirting, spritzing, tasting or removing seals, & No fingers EVER!

I had someone last week spray themselves in front of me in kmart. I was actually shocked and a bit angry. Someone will buy that with less for what they paid for. I was also angry they didn't care I was right there and went ahead and did it. It wasn't a little spritz either it was an all over body and under the armpits job!!

Herbal Essences is one definitely NOT on my list because I can't cope with the fragrance.

Flipping the lid to smell the general scent sure..But actually taking said foil off to me is a no-go.
If they are encouraging this behaviour they should start having samples in the grocery aisles - this has the potential to ruin some of their products especially ones with stringent expiry dates if people are willy-nilly opening items.

Absolutely, darasparke, very well put. No way will I buy something without first being able to see if I can cope with the fragrance as I have a massive problem with fragrances but no way would I flip a foil top, I'd do without unless it could be returned.
