Someone please wake me – I'm having a hair-mare!

I don’t know what it is, but lately my hair has been a limp, lifeless mess.
At first I thought it was because I was wearing my hair down everyday and subconsciously running my fingers through my strands, but then I wore it up and, despite all my efforts, it still looked dull and dreary after a day.
So I decided it must be the styling products I was using – and went cold turkey. And boy, if I thought my hair looked lifeless before, well it was worse than ever without the helping hand of mane maintainers!
Extremely annoyed and ready to all but shave my hair off in frustration (yes, I know, I can be a bit dramatic at times but I was at my wits end!), I sought the help of my hairdresser who gave me the following tips to keep my locks looking healthy and revitalised:
- If you dye your hair use a colour enhancing shampoo and conditioner (try Redken 5th Avenue NYC Color Extend Shampoo and Conditioner) and be sure to have your roots regularly retouched so they don’t appear dull and greasy when they’re not.
- Avoid washing your hair everyday as it can over-stimulate the natural oil production in your scalp and leave it feeling oilier than before. Instead, spritz some dry shampoo (try Batiste Original Dry Shampoo) into your roots between washes.
- Switch your regular shampoo and conditioner for a different brand every now and again to avoid letting your hair become desensitised to that product. Something with a lightweight formula is usually best (try Sebastian Professional Light Shampoo and Conditioner).
Have you ever suffered from an unexplained case of limp, lifeless locks? What was your remedy?
Have you tried any of the products mentioned above?

I occasionally have bad hair mare's, nothing shampoo, conditioner and styling products can't fix.

Limp, greasy hair is the worst! I use dry shampoo every day, saves my locks from feeling absolutely disgusting all day long.

Often my hair is limp and flat at the top and frizzy and dry at the ends. I'm still trying to find a remedy!

My hair gets pretty dull because I colour it and heat style a lot... When this happens I try to use a hair treatment or mask once a week and go easy with the ghd. To fight limpness I use volumising mousse and other products, but too much product can weigh the hair down and make it worse so try a clarifying shampoo once a week.

So glad I'm not the only one with BHD syndrome aaghh. I have no time for my hair in the mornings and just put as much product I can to make it look half respectable.

I think the humidity has affected most of us aussies lately! I use some dry hair shamppo to give the roots some 'oomph' and tie hair in a bun for a while to give it volume when I take it out

I always look at my diet when my hair is getting unmanageable. I also notice my hair changes when I'm stressed. I have been working really hard to treat my hair healthy by giving it heaps of treatments, using little to no heat appliances, regular trims and now I have stopped colouring it. So far I have noticed fantastic results. I'm now washing my hair every second to third day and alternate between two shampoos and conditioners.

I would agree with the switching brands being a myth comments made by the other girls - I tend to use less conditioner for that week and let my hair dry naturally to allow it to gain some body back. I must admit though that my hair does not get limp very often...that's at least one less thing I have to worry about.

A change of products definitely helps, and trying to use the right products to suit your hair type so your hairs not heavy and weighed down seems to be my best solution for lifeless hair. Diet seems to make a difference to hair health too!

Lately my hair has been falling alot, i was wearing up all the time, now i have changed and wear it down more often, having your hair up all the time makes it split easier.

I agree with changing shampoos and conditioners regularily. I find that my hair ends up dull and lifeless if I use the same ones for too long so now I buy a different one every time I run out. My hair has never looked or felt better.

I use a deep cleansing shampoo about once a week to help remove any styling product build up, which often causes my hair to look dull and lifeless. Regular trims also helps. Most days I wear my hair in a ponytail anyway because I don't have time before work to do anything much to it, plus it's pretty frizzy which doesn't help.

I do a double cleanse with my regular shampoo whenever I've gone overboard with products or just gottne lazy really. Have just started using a dry shampoo (Fudge - because I totally forgot the name of the one that gets the raves i.e. Bastiste) and it definitely helps although I haven't as yet mastered how to use it down my part without looking slightly grey there haha!
Apart from that I've found switching brands makes my hair go oily, or my scalp go really dry, so I'm sticking with the same shampoo I've been using for over a year now. I guess it's an individual thing.

It's amazing isn't it how some days our hair is so bouncy and feels so great and then other days it's just not happening! Blame it on the hormones I say!! Oh well, they must be partially to blame at least. I do find personally that fluctuating between different shampoos, conditioners and treatments seems to keep my hair 'on it's toes'. Other than that, there is always my trusty Batiste - I love that stuff - it changes my day!

Switching products helps me, a trim or some layers would probably give my hair more lift but I don't plan on that yet so hair up, a quick dry shampoo and hiding the limp look is my best tactic for now.
