Washing your hair every day? 7 reasons it's doing more harm than good

Do you wash you hair every day? Do you wake up early every morning just to get your shampoo fix? Can you not stand the thought of second day hair?
Well stop it. Now.
Because while you may think that washing your hair every day is doing it the world of good, it’s actually doing the opposite.
I know it’s hard. I used to wash my hair every day too. But ever since finding out about the following seven reasons not to, I’ve learned to embrace the idea of a sleep-in and a shorter shower.
Reason #1: your colour won’t fade as much
When you shampoo, you’re effectively opening your hair cuticles. The hair cuticles are what hold on to colour, so by opening and washing them every day you’re losing double the amount of colour you would if you only shampooed every second day.
Reason #2: a little grease is good
Do you curls fall within five minutes? Does your ponytail droop unless you tie it as tight as possible? A little grease and dirt in your hair makes styling so much easier. It helps to hold the hair where you want it, meaning less time to style and less hair spray.
Reason #3: you won’t be stripping your hair’s natural oils
By washing your hair every day, the natural oils produced by the hair and scalp are being stripped. These oils are what keep your hair healthy and shiny. If you give them a chance to work, you may just find you don’t have to wash your hair as often.
Reason #4: you’ll tame frizz and increase shine
Even just one day without washing gives the hair’s natural oils a chance to shine. Not to mention it helps to hold down flyaways and tame frizz. If you have frizzy hair and you’re washing it every day, that’s a big part of the problem.
Reason #5: you’ll be doing less heat styling
If every time you wash your hair you have to also blow dry, straighten or curl it, that’s a lot of heat damage you could be avoiding. If you wash it less, you’ll need to style it less, meaning fewer split ends and less dryness.
Reason #6: you’ll save money
Shampoos and conditioners aren’t cheap. And if you’re using both every day, they’re running out a lot faster. So save yourself some money and make your products last twice as long by using them half as much.
Reason #7: you’ll have less product build up
Most people wash their hair every day because they say it’s oily and greasy if they don’t. But the oil and grease could actually be a result of product-build up rather than not washing it. By using shampoo and conditioner every day, the residue from each is building up in the hair, making it greasier and heavier. When you first stop washing it, your hair may take a while to adjust but once it does, you’ll notice less oil and grease and less need to wash.

I don't feel clean unless I've washed my hair (usually daily) and I find that using good products is the key to keeping my hair healthy.

I wash mine twice a week and just rinse it with water if it looks like it needs it on other days

I might be exaggerating a little bit but it can be super difficult sometimes if youre doing high intense work around the house or you exercise intensely or intense work or something.... basically something that will make you sweat like crazy
Its tough not to wash it and shampoo it maybe dry shampoo can do good but it can only do so much

I now wash my hair every 3 or 4 days whereas I can see in the comments that back in 2017 it was every second day. I can't believe how much time I wasted every morning for years washing and styling my hair, and not really doing my hair any good at all.

I wash my hair when it needs it. Sometimes a week, other times 4 or 5 days. It's long and thick and I let it dry naturally. If I have to get my hair done, I will wash it beforehand though. I also use dry shampoo if it looks a little limp around the front. I must admit, my hair is in good condition with very few split ends. Such a difference from when I washed every 2nd day. I had very dry, crunchy hair - at times.

I washed my hair daily for years and years but now I wash it every second day. If I've been to the salon for a colour I try to stretch the washing until day three.
My hair was feeling rather dry but I've found my hair is a lot healthier now and the style lasts longer.

When I was younger I went through a faze of having to wash my hair daily. The more I washed it the more oily it got and it was a vicious cycle of having to wash it all the time. These days I try to last as long as I can. Depending on my hair and whether or not I have had it coloured etc I can go from 2-4 days. I would say I wash my hair 2 a week usually, sometimes 3.

If I wash my hair every day it gets more oily, I try to hold out for every 3 days, but, depending on how hot it is, I have to give in and wash it every other day. I sometimes apply dry shampoo to stretch it for an extra day, if I want it freshly washed and styled for a certain event.

I wash my hair twice maximum thrice a week and as traditionally i am from India we have a tendency to oil our hair prior to washing. I strongly recommend it as it maintains the natural oil plus makes your hair super smooth after shower. OF course washing off the hair oil is stressful for beginners but once you get used to get you will be super happy with the quality and texture of your hair.

When my hair is "dirty" it holds the style well, especially an "up-do", and people seem to comment that my hair looks good on those days. If my fringe is a bit oily I may use dry shampoo on the fringe only. So, I wash my hair every 3-4 days. It saves my hair and money!

My hairdresser told me washing daily causes more oil, so I now aim for two to three times a week. It has helped my hair

I have never washed my hair daily. One: I am way too lazy for that. Two: My hair is very long and takes too much product for daily consumption. Three: I like to let my hair air dry, Aint got time for that everyday.

I have scalp psoriasis, so on my good days when I'm not a flaking machine I can go for 4 days without washing. On my bad days when I'm using my scalp lotion and because it's an oily lotion, so I wash my hair in 1-2 days. I know a few people that washes their hair everyday and they lose alot hair.
