5 of the best beauty innovations

There’s no way I can say this without sounding like an old fuddy-duddy, so here it goes…
Back in my day, we didn’t have half the brilliant products that exist today – and just so we’re clear, ‘my day’ is like, 10 years ago when I started using beauty products on a regular basis. Anyway, back to my point: there’s no way we could’ve imagined such wonderful products and tools would be in our beauty future.
Basically, 2014 is a pretty good time for beauty lovers. These are just a few of the best beauty innovations that we couldn’t live without.
AT-HOME GEL NAIL KITS
Gel manicures were revolutionary to begin with, but throw in the ability to do your nails in the comfort of your own home and you’ve got yourself a pretty impressive development in the beauty industry. Not only have these fancy little kits helped women all over the world achieve gorgeously glossy nails that’ll look fabulous for up to two weeks, they’re helping them save money in the long term, too.
Try: OPALLAC Starter Kit
BB CREAMS
Once upon a time I had to use a moisturiser and a sunscreen and a foundation. Nowadays one fabulous little product does it all. WHY DID NO ONE THINK OF THIS SOONER? BB cream is truly one of the greatest inventions of all time – not only because it’s shaved about 10 minutes off of every women’s morning routine, but it’s left complexions around the globe looking more even, radiant and gorgeous.
Try: MAC Prep + Prime Beauty Balm SPF 30+
AUTOMATIC HAIR CURLERS
Curling hair can be so tiresome. And if you have the same lack of upper-arm strength as I do, a tad bit painful to hold your arm up for so long. Well luckily, someone out there in Hairland heard our silent cries and developed a hair curler that literally does all the hard work for you. All you have to do is place your hair through the clamp, push a button and let the machine do all the curling. It’s bloody genius.
Try: VS Sassoon Curl Secret
FIBRE LASH MASCARA
Mascara is wonderful, don’t get me wrong. But fibre lash mascara is just next-level lash lengthening madness that cannot go unrecognised. The tiny little fibres in the formula seem so scary at first, but once applied give your lashes that extra flutter that leaves you thinking, “Pffft, who even needs lash extensions?”
Try: ModelCo FIBRE LASH
TEETH WHITENING PENS
I used to go to a dentist and pay him a lot of money for the pleasure of gleaming white teeth. Then I used whitening toothpastes to do the job. And now I can use a nifty little pen that basically feels like I’m erasing all of those coffee and tea stains. Teeth whitening has come leaps and bounds in the last few years and it’s made a big impact on pearlers while being nicer to my wallet.
Try: Colgate Optic White™ Toothbrush + Built-in Whitening Pen

Just look how dated this article is in such a short time! We now have half a dozen brands of at home gel nails that don't require a lamp, & BB creams have been eclipsed by CC & DD creams, Estée Lauder have even created an EE cream.
Don't overlook the magnificently elevated levels of SPF we've got now, SPF 50 is pretty impressive. Serums are great too: hyaluronic acid + Vitamin C serums are hyped about over the internet.

I agree with BB creams. I have heaps of blemishes though, so I mix my Maybelline BB cream with my foundation. It provides a smoother application, and the SPF in the BB cream makes it worthwhile!

I love my Opallac kit, cant do without my gel nails - will never use normal polish EVER again. My BB cream is amazing too but I wish the coverage was a bit better, I normally brush over with MAC pressed powder for better coverage.

Carli, if you are an old fuddy-duddy, than I wonder what I must be. I vaguely remember what skin care and makeup was like when I first started using it in my late teens (I'm now fifty-one).
