How-to: matte navy nails with glossy tips

Isn’t it striking? The good news is you can create this look using any dark nail hue – be it a chocolate, black, grey, navy, or berry – just be sure to steer clear of pale shades. If you don’t, the contrast between the matte and shiny areas won’t be as obvious.
Oh, and you’re not limited to creating a French tip with this look. Why not try a matte base with glossy dots or even a half-moon mani? The options are endless, so have fun!
What do you think of this subtle-yet-striking nail art look? Is it something you’re keen to try at home? And have you ever used a matte topcoat before?

I prefer glossy finish. A scratch or chip on matte nails is very obvious!

I love the look but it kind of reminds me of the texture of chalkboards (please don't hate me!).

I really like this idea. I like the navy/dark blue even better than K Kardashians matte black and gloss tips.

I've got some actual matte polish in a colour called "Black Cherry" (very dark, slightly burgundy, but nearly black), and I've been wondering how to play with it. I've currently got it on my toenails, where it looks kind of odd, but also kind of cool. I haven't got any matte topcoat on hand, but if I painted the nails with the matte polish and then did shiny topcoat for the tips, I think that would work, too. I need to get some matte topcoat, though, it seems a lot more flexible...
