Olivia Wilde slams celebs who go 'makeup free'

Olivia Wilde’s already impressed us with her openness about her post-baby bod, and now she’s hit us with another honest truth: celebrities who go make-up free aren’t really that brave.
Yep, the actress has said what we were all secretly thinking! Taking to Twitter to share her views, she slammed the “bare-faced” selfies for setting unrealistic beauty standards:
“Don’t compare yourself to actors. You too would look ‘perfect’ with a giant wall of soft light following you around.” You mean like in this too-funny Insta snap, Olivia?

The “giant wall of soft light” is probably an exaggeration, but I get what Olivia’s trying to say.
Speaking to Huffington Post Live, the 31-year-old mum gave some context to the controversial tweet.
“I guess I’m a proponent in general of people loving themselves,” she said.
“I looked at this huge wall of glowy light and all these bounce boards underneath me, and I thought, ‘People at home watching movies thinking that they’re supposed to look a certain way, in that flawless nature that Hollywood promotes in some films’. I just wanted to point out...that none of this is real.
“I feel like when I was an adolescent, that would have been kind of illuminating for me.”
Of course, most of us are smart enough to know there’s a LOT of hair and make-up help behind our favourite celebrities’ smouldering red carpet looks.
But with the recent rise of the ‘no make-up selfie’, it’s hard not to question whether these celebs really do have picture-perfect skin IRL. I mean, just look at new mum Jessica Biel (whose fresh face defies all post-pregnancy logic)!

Heidi Klum’s also caused a bit of a stir with her recent “before make-up” shot where she flaunted a suspiciously flawless face. We reckon she was wearing a BB cream at the very least!
In comparison, Olivia’s set to go totally make-up free in her upcoming film, Meadowland.
Following in the wake of a barefaced Reese Witherspoon in Wild, the actress also spends most of the film wearing track pants and baggy jumpers – a look she says felt “really freeing”.
In fact, it wasn’t even a big deal: “It was just a reality for the character and certainly didn’t feel like a brave risk ... I don’t hear people calling men brave for not wearing foundation.”
She certainly has a point. Well said, Olivia!
While I agree that going make-up free from time to time’s no biggie, I still can’t imagine going barefaced for a year, like this girl did!
What do you think of Olivia’s views on celeb beauty? Do you think they’re setting unrealistic beauty standards, or could you not care less?

What a hilarious response. It was like people losing their minds when Uma Thurman wore makeup but with no mascara; it was a 'totally new look' and 'she's had surgery'. The five Gs: Good God Girl Get a Grip.

I'm sure they even have stylists to help them take the perfect 'makeup free' photos

I love Olivia! She really tells it straight! I get annoyed with those "make up free" selfies too.

I really couldn't care less about celebrities. They are so totally unrealistic. They bore me TBH!

I'm glad selfies weren't a thing when I was a teenager. Still don't like them as an adult. Wish I'd read more articles like this back then. Definately needed the reminder that perfection came with a huge team, perfect lighting, etc.

Selfies yes I am glad I didn't have them in my teen years, that and things like Facebook.

Jessica Biel's features are difficult to distinguish because of too much light, but she's got a cap on to prevent any unflattering shadows. We know that teams of hair & makeup people are behind every look, but as a teen, I couldn't compare. It's not just women & girls who have unreal expectations, it's men too! I had a friend complain to me about his wife in a hugely inappropriate way. I slammed him! Not all men think we always look lovely, there's often a catcalling bogan if we DO go out sans makeup or develop a stretchmark. If more teens, male & female knew how far from ideal the stars really are, it would get rid of a lot of unreal expectations. Like OW, I'm not fooled by these "barefaced" selfies.

I think celebrities get a lot of facial treatments and have incredible skincare regimes, so it's possible their skin looks flawless without makeup

I go barefaced in public all the time. The only time I feel that my skin is naked is when I go out in the sun without sunscreen on.

I really like Olivia Wilde she does seem very down to earth and comfortable in her own skin. I admire celebs who share selfies without any makeup showing their FLAWS and not just to do it to make it seem they look exactly the same with and without makeup for example Kim Kardashian.
I know there are others but can't think of their names but one celeb who was brave enough to share her imperfect skin without makeup was AnnaLynne McCord

Each to their own, if someone wants to go make-up free and post it on social media who really cares apart from people interested.

Oh how did she roll her eyes like that, love it! And celebs sans makeup, I'm sure it wasn't the first photo they took, all a bit too staged for me. But each their own huh.

Couldn't care less about how others look, they have to live with their face not me so why should it affect me

I personally am not affected by all those 'barefaced' selfies out there, but there are probably many who are.

Totally agree and I wonder how many selfies they take until they get the best make up free shot? Like 199? We are all guilty of trying to take the most flattering shots. It's the pap shots as intrusive as they can be are probably a true candid warts and all through and even then you don't know what's been photoshopped these days!!

With all the treatments and the best products they can afford I am sure their skin looks perfect without make up anyway.

I think bare-faced celebrities aren't actually bare-faced...they could have used some light photoshopping, a small amount of BB cream or even a filter that you can't notice. The point is that this is a controversial topic and people are always going to feel like celebrities are much more gorgeous in general. I think we also forget the fact that they are able to go to pricey beauty salons and spas, and we usually spend most of our time making a homemade mask from the kitchen.
