How to find a lipstick in your 50s

Finding makeup for over 50s can be complicated. Women who are over 50 want something very different from their cosmetics than a woman who is in her 20s – and this is especially true when it comes to lipstick.
When you’re in your 50s, there are a couple of dos and don’ts that you should always keep in mind when you’re on the hunt for the perfect lipstick. This include what colours, textures and finishes to look out for.

We called on Makeup Artist, Nicola Burford, to provide us with her tips for finding the best anti-aging lipstick for women who are over 50.
When it comes to texture, “the best lipsticks to look for are those with a satin or creamy texture, as these flatter a more mature skin,” says Nicole.
There are certain colours that you should avoid, such as any with too much of a blue undertone, as they can flatten the look of the lip. “Choose warmer lipsticks with mid-strength colouring as these will ensure your lips look fresh, young and lively without being overpowering,” suggests Nicole. Likewise, colours that are too dark don’t tend to suit more mature skin tones.
Finally, if you’re still slathering your lips with the same gloss you’ve been using for the past 10 years, it’s time to stop. “Try to avoid sheer or really glossy textured lipsticks as they have a tendency to bleed into the lines and wrinkles around the lips,” says Nicole.

I love creamy textured lippies so it looks like once I reach my fifties, I won’t have to change my makeup routine for lips.

good tips indeed! I do agree a too dark lippie on an older woman can be ageing. I love red so hope I can always find a red that looks good no matter how old it get! I would still love to be wearing red if I was 100!

I use Loreal Infallable lipstick in violet parfait, and I constantly get comments about it. I find that it goes with pretty much any colour outfit as well.

I love to try new colours. If I feel confident in wearing a particular colour and it does not clash with my skintone. I am going to rock it.

Another year and I'll be 60 !!! Gosh, time flies !!! LOL !!! I stay well away from matte lipsticks. I love satin, creamy lipsticks with a wee bit of shine :).

I'm way over the 50 mark but ageing gracefully - I'd never follow anything unless I wanted to and feeling comfortable with your choice will bring confidence, in anything.

I'm not in my 50's but agree with the BH suggested Estee Lauder Pure Color lippies, they are great. I would have added using a lip primer to plump and fill the lines on and around the lips and using 2 lip liners, a coloured one and an invisible one outside that line to have double protection from feathering

Im over 50 but I refuse to live by the rules and I wear all different colours and shades of lipstick. At the moment im loving vibrant reds. My lipstick collection as many different colours. When I was younger I always went for pinks and didnt have the confidence for bolder colours....now I wear what ever I want.

Thanks Trish .... I think its important to do what makes us happy. As long as we are not hurting others then we should just do as we wish.

Helen Mirren look's absolutely fantastic in that photo, her hair & make-up even the lip gloss which I'm assuming as it wouldn't be a lipstick it's too shiny for that look great on her & she still look's great for her age too. I totally agree with everything in this article except for the last paragraph about avoiding sheer & glossy lipstick or lip glosses for say if Helen can pull this look off & she certainly has I reckon any of the Hollywood stars can too as long as they have or look as good as Helen. I hope I look that good when I'm that age.

I think it is personal choice and that women should still wear what they like at 50.
