Jessica Alba spills her beauty secrets

Jessica Alba is many things - actress, mum of two, wife, style icon and successful entrepreneur - but that doesn’t seem to have slowed her down one bit. She’s been busy growing her natural beauty brand, The Honest Company, into a billion-dollar empire, and thanks to her stunning looks and insider credibility, she’s fawned over by those in the industry.
On the set of her Allure cover shoot, Alba revealed her best beauty tricks, and on the flipside, some of the worst beauty advice she’s ever received.
Who taught you about beauty?
"My mom. 'Put your face on before you leave the house' - that's her thing. I was also raised by my grandma on my dad's side. She [used] one product: red lipstick. She dabbed it on her cheeks and put it on her lips, and that's all she needed."
bh loves these red lippies: Revlon Super Lustrous™ Lipstick in Fire and Ice, L'Oréal Paris Infallible 2-Step Longwear Lipstick, ck one color Pure Color Lipstick in Little Liar, Max Factor Colour Elixir Lipstick in Ruby Tuesday
What was your look in high school?
"Nineties grunge. Doc Martens. I got my belly button pierced the second I could. I wanted to shave my head and pierce my nose, and my mom said she was going to make me stop acting. I was like, 'Oh, that's so mean.'"
What's your biggest skin issue?
"Dry and dehydrated skin. The hydrating mist [by Honest Beauty] is amazing. That's big for travel, and also to refresh your make-up in the middle of the day."
bh's top hydrating mists: La Mer The Mist, Jurlique Lavender Hydrating Mist, Eminence Stone Crop Hydrating Mist, Nutrimetics Nutri-Spa Recharging Hydration Mist
Do you wear fragrance?
"Not usually. If I wear anything, I'll wear a mix of some essential oils, like gardenia and jasmine, a little bit of vanilla. I like bergamot as well."
bh's natural perfume picks: Vanessa Megan Autumn Afternoon Natural Perfume, Jurlique Essence of Rose Roll-On Fragrance Oil, Lush Gorilla Perfume Imogen Rose
What’s the worst beauty advice you’ve ever gotten?
"That you need to pound on the powder to set your makeup. It's just not true, and it looks cakey. Just spot where you need it."
Have you ever had a bad spa experience?
"I went to a Chinese-medicine reflexology place in the Bahamas. I think they were going for blood. I did cupping after that, and I ended up having, like, 12 bruises on my back—and that was relaxing [in] comparison."
bh loves: These beauty spas for excellent treatments that will leave you looking and feeling out-of-this-world amazing.
What's one part of your beauty routine that you don't do around your husband?
"It shocks him whenever I wear masks. Especially when I wear those big paper masks that make you look like a serial killer. My kids don't like that, either."
bh loves these cloth masks: LonVitalité C4 Coconut Milk Hydrating & Nourishing Face Mask, Essenzza Health Anti-Ageing Antioxidant

Also I do the same for "fragnances". Since eating only raw food and destilled water for many years now, I get wheezing, nausea or/and eczema on synthetic perfumes, so I wear like her-essential oils (now my fave is purple basil, refreshing for summer). Also I agree about "foundation". I think she is going to be the only celeb I like :P

"Nineties grunge. Doc Martens. I got my belly button pierced the second I could", lol I did the same! My style was Dr martins and still wear my piercing 20 years later!

I love using those masks! Using a sun lamp at home was probably the worst thing I did beauty wise - my sister bought one and it was literally a big light bulb - that was back in the late 70's before we knew how bad they were.

Sounds like she has a really simple approach to beauty. The worst beauy advice I ever recieved was how to apply makeup from someone I later realised had no idea how to apply makeup. I looked awful.

Love this article, how sweet is she...........my only bad advice, which always happens is someone telling me to buy the wrong colour foundation.

The worst beauty advice I've received - and continue to receive - is when I go to a makeup counter. The sales assistant always recommends a foundation in a shade that is one to three shades darker than what I need.

The worst beauty advice I ever got was to only wear foundation to cover blemishes and nothing else. It looked incomplete and flat.

I have dry skin too and have stopped the powder altogether as it was to ageing. Dewy is the way to go!

Yup, I am guilty of wearing too much powder and I really need to stop it!
