The best skin care routine for your 40s

When you hit your forties, your skin starts to change. Thanks to fluctuating hormones and all those years of baking in the sun, dark spots, deeper wrinkles and pigmentation begin cropping up, making you curse your younger, naive self.
Here at beautyheaven, we’re all for ageing gracefully, but we’re not against arming yourself with some tricks to keep your skin looking as youthful and healthy as possible. And maybe even slow down those inevitable signs of ageing…
GRAB A GENTLE CLEANSER
No matter what your age, thoroughly cleansing your skin morning and night is essential. Not only does it rinse away dirt, oil and make-up, but it also makes way for the ingredients from your other skin care products (especially those anti-ageing wonders) to penetrate more deeply into your skin. In turn, you’ll get better results. If you’re forking out good money on anti-ageing products, you may as well give them their best chance of working, right?

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE EYES
The eye area is where the first telltale signs of ageing appear. Crows feet, dark circles, puffiness, fine lines and sagging eyelids can start developing in your twenties and become more visible over time. When you reach the 4-0, it’s time to call in the big guns and invest in a targeted eye cream. Choose an eye cream that contains peptides – it’ll give the thin skin around the eyes a much-needed boost of collagen, plumping out lines and reducing the appearance of dark circles.

YOUR ANTI-AGEING SAVIOUR
If you didn’t acquaint yourself with retinol in your thirties, get your hands on this super-powered anti-ageing ingredient now. Retinol works by increasing cell production in the top layer of the skin, which encourages collagen production and reduces pigmentation. Apply a retinol treatment at night after cleansing for smoother, firmer and plumper skin upon waking.

ENRICH YOUR SKIN
As you age, your skin becomes increasingly lacking in vital moisture, which leads to a parched complexion. When your skin is dehydrated, your skin cells lose their plumpness, resulting in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The solution? A rich, high-quality moisturiser to restore hydration and plump out thirsty skin. In the morning, choose a hydrating moisturiser that contains SPF sun protection, and at night, opt for an enriching night cream for optimum hydration.

I believe my skin got used to some products and it doesn't react as it should anymore that is why I need even stronger products like prescription retinoids once or twice a year. Other than that I like Redermic R as a night cream :)

I use Clinique repairwear laser focus serum twice a day which helps retain moisture and minimises the look of fine lines and wrinkles. I need to look after my skin more now I'm in my 40's. Wish I'd looked after it more when I was younger and hadn't spent so much time in the sun.

I've just started using a retinol serum, so too soon to see a difference. I've been using eye cream for a while, but I'm not happy with it. I like the sound of the Sanctuary Spa.

I'll be 47 this year. Yikes! I've always looked after my skin. I'm currently using a mixture of Clarins, Nuxe and ASAP products.

40 is not far off for me. I've spent a lot of time and money trying to find a great cleanser and I've actually found a few. Cleanser, toner, eye cream, serum and moisturiser is my current routine. Plus exfoliating and face mask at least twice a week.
