How to look after your skin at the gym
Exercise is great for your mind and body, but can wreak havoc on your skin if you don’t look after it properly. If you’ve noticed your skin breaks out after a workout, or if it just doesn’t look as hydrated as it did when you started, then you may need to switch up your skin care routine. Here’s how to make sure your skin stays flawless before, during and after you get down and dirty (in the gym, of course).
Don’t wear make-up
Hopefully, you avoid applying a full face of make-up to hit the gym. Everybody knows that once make-up mixes with sweat, it clogs pores and can lead to imperfections – plus, getting all dolled up makes you look a little out of place! However, applying a lightweight tinted moisturiser or leaving the day’s leftover make-up on your face can be just as bad.
Wipe your face before you work out
Giving your skin a quick wipe with a cleansing wipe before you work out will help remove make-up as well as any dirt and debris that has built up throughout the day. This means you will sweat it out on a bare face, rather than day-old grime, which clogs pores and can lead to pimples. Keep a pack of Natures Organics Australian Pure Cucumber & Vitamin E Cleansing Wipes (or if you've got oily skin try Clearasil Daily Clear Deep Cleansing Wipes) in your gym bag so you're always prepared.
Pop your hair in a pony
Whether your hair is long or short, keep it off your face every time you exercise. This keeps additional sweat and oil from clogging your pores, especially around your hairline. If your hair is long, tie it in a ponytail or bun, and if it’s on the shorter side, push it back with Scunci Active Luxe Braid-Back Stretch Headwrap.
Excessive sweating dehydrates the body – and that includes your skin. Dehydrated skin is often lined and prematurely aged, so bring a water bottle to your sweat sessions and sip from it frequently. Also, wearing a lightweight moisturiser, like Dr. LeWinn's Private Formula Day Cream Moisturiser Light SPF 15, will help your skin to retain water.
Spritz your skin
A face mist will help to calm your skin, and cool you down. Spritz a little Natio Refreshing Face Mist over your face straight after your workout. It contains rose extracts to calm and hydrate, and aloe vera to refresh and soothe.
Shower as soon as you can
A post-workout shower is essential, and the sooner the better. As we’ve said before, sweat clogs pores, and the sooner you wash it off your skin, the less time imperfections have to brew. Lather yourself with AHAVA Mineral Botanic Cream Wash in Hibiscus and Fig for a super thorough cleanse.
Use tepid water
When you’re dealing with tired and sore muscles, it can be tempting to wash with hot water. However, this strips your skin of vital oils and can leave your skin feeling dry and itchy. Use tepid water, and be sure to follow with a hydrating moisturiser. We like Kora Organics Hydrating Day and Night Cream as it replenishes and revitalises skin.
