Plastic polling

Beauty, beauty, beauty. We could all happily talk about this topic forever but still there are so many things that surprise me. For instance, did you know two thirds of people believe being gorgeous is not just about physical attractiveness? So far, so good. Yet despite that huge air kiss for inner beauty, 40 per cent of people would still alter their looks if money was no object.
Confusing huh? My dear colleague Claire recently alerted me to an international study about beauty by market research giant Synovate and I couldn’t wait to share the results with you.
7,000 people participated so it’s only a drop in the opinion ocean but since they came from countries as diverse as Brazil, Bulgaria, Korea, Spain, South Africa and the US, it makes for fascinating reading. The survey focussed on how different cultures see themselves on the beauty scale, and whether they would change anything about their looks.
Happily, 35 per cent of people worldwide attribute beauty to what’s on the inside while another 32 per cent believe confidence is what counts. And 30 per cent say no way, no how to plastic surgery, even if they had an endless supply of cash.
There were however plenty of contradictions, especially on the touchy subject of plastic surgery. Apparently 20 per cent would go under the knife for their appearance and in most countries, twice as many women as men admitted to considering surgery. Except in India where only a handful of either sex had given plastic surgery much thought.
Maybe that has something to do with the fact that 24 per cent of Indians think they’re beautiful. Only second to the number of South Africans (32%). Their Korean and US cousins were not so optimistic with the Americans leading the poll for feeling blah and wanting to change their appearance.
Wonder how we Australians would fair?
How do you feel about resorting to plastic surgery for beauty?

i think the only time i'd have plastic surgery is if i was in some terrible accident and needed to fix my face again lol hope that doesnt happen but my point is that i'm more than happy with myself in every way. Flaws are beautiful in their own way and become a part of our individuality...otherwise we would all be the same or 'perfect' And i think the reason why indians and south africans have those opinions if because their cultures are more authentic and they are more realistic in their interpretation of beauty.

{sigh} i think it's a real shame that we women are made to feel ashamed for showing in our faces and bodies the effects of the life we've lived, the children we've borne, the sleepless nights and hard work and laughter and tears. the lines and squidgy bits show who we are, and who we have been to others. even beauty products and salons seem to be all about erasing this, telling us that we should look like dolls or teenagers. i'd like to think that we can use make-up and clothes to pamper ourselves, to enjoy and accentuate what's there, at all ages and shapes, and to celebrate who we are.

Yeah, it's not for me - I can spot someone who has had work done a mile away...
That said though, last week I was walking thru Southlands and this guy about 18yo and his female friend are standing right in front of me and he very matter of factly looks at me, points at me to his friend and says "she's had plastic surgery!" I was very taken aback and shocked - they were total strangers commenting on my appearance! aarrrggghhh! I replied with a: "No I have not!" and proceeded on my merry way...
I didn't know if it was an insult or compliment, either way I was not impressed... and besides, I'm not that old... (I'm 36).
I'll admit that I have big eyes, prominent cheekbones, dimples and lips and that if I just over do the lipgloss I tend to look fake, but even I can see that so I try to apply the gloss moderately... lol :)

Whilst it's not for me, I'm not against plastic surgery for people who feel really bad about themselves. I think if it can make you feel better about yourself then there's nothing wrong with it. But it's becoming so common now, and I think some people go too far with it and end up looking fake.

Hmm thats interesting. I believe beauty counts for whats on the inside AND confidence too. If money wasnt an issue - forget surgery for enhancing looks, Id blow it all at the salon.
I doubt I could ever go under the knife either - but if I had any facial deformities, Im sure I would. In the future, Im planning to get that corrective eye laser thingy, and even that scares me a little...

I would't feel right at all about plastic surgery - i'd be changing myself into something i'm not, trying to imitate a certain beauty. i mean, beauty is subjective; it's different in everyone's eyes and the people who only see physical looks as attractive lose the chance to meet some great people.

Plastic surgery interest me if it's safe and not too much pain. I hope I could look better in both face and body.

i've daydreamed about looking different and better, but i dont think i'll ever act on getting plastic surgery to do so -- there's too much risk and the complications that can come with it is just not worth it, oh and also the constant maintenaince.
plus if you're getting boob-jobs or bum-jobs[?] to impress people, especially guys, not many guys would actually want a fake girlfriend, they only like the look but many guys wouldn't want their girlfriends to get it.

While i have nothing against people who have plastic surgery, i personally would never go under the knife. I've seen the difference between my mom who's never had anything done and my auntie (who's had so much work done to her face), and aging naturally is definitely tops.

I think it's the little imperfections that make you who you are, what's wrong with aging naturally, wrinkles show your life experiences. If a women had a deformity, or needed it for health reasons then I agree with it. I believe if you're happy with yourself and look after yourself then you won't need it.

I can sort of understand where the women come from, I think the general skin tone and facial structure of most indian women are just gorgeous to look at!

There was a woman on tv this morning that apparently spent $10000 on cosmetic work for her brothers wedding and she still looked really natural. I think each to their own so long as you don't go over the top or think it can majorly change your life

i think it depends on how you feel. i personally wouldn't have p.surgery but then i don't need it.
if i had a deformity or accident i would definatley have it to try to improve my looks.
but .......................... for those people out there that are ok looking but really don't think they are, surgery to them is the same as fixing a deformity....................does that make sense. some beautiful women get it done and we wonder why. beauty is largley about how we feel ourselves, our confidence. etc.

I would never ever have Plastic surgery....and to convince myself even more I just think of two little words: Michael Jackson!! What an absolute mess! Not for me thanks, I'll try to age gracefully, wrinkles and all..............

A BIG NO for me. However I have know people who are so against plastic surgery and then hit mid thirties and change their mind and have all sorts of things done. I would know that I'd done it and that would make me feel alot worse than not having it done. I'm not interested in botox either. I'd rather just keep using products and visiting beauty therapist once in a while.

I know that confidence is definitely a big key for beauty. If you're heappy, healthy and confident on the inside, that shines out. I wouldn't ever have plastic surgery. I think that in my own head I'd know that I'm just trying to be someone different to who I am. Someone better than who I am. That's just my point of view. xx

I've thought about it, but decided it's not really for me, I'm not a big fan of needles, let alone pain & the plastic surgery look I don't find too appealing either.

Plastic surgery doesn't interest me....going under an anaesthetic for beauty is defintely not on! However, procedures like botox etc i would definitely consider.

All all about looks these days, unfortunately. Many celebrities have altered their faces numerous times so they look strange and alien-like. It's quite scary.

plastic surgery unfortunately is become a lot more common these days, what is wrong with aging gracefully.... i dont understand why you would want your face so tight you cannot show any emotion!
