The face masks you need in your beauty kit

If you ask me, you can’t go past a magnificent face mask for the perfect at-home pamper sesh.
Whether you’re all about multi-masking or prefer a speedy skin fix, it feels amazingly indulgent to apply your favourite formula, plonk yourself down on the couch and chillax while that mask works its magic.

The good news for face mask fans? Beauty brands are now working hard to inspire you to use them on the reg, as opposed to just the odd occasion – which means the products themselves have also had a make-over!
From spritz-able skin saviours to masks made of foil, here are the face mask trends coined as game-changers for your skin...
1. Mask primers
Think your favourite face mask couldn’t perform any better? Believe it or not, there’s now a spritz-on product to prep your skin so it’s even more receptive to your treatment. Origins Maskimizer Skin-Optimizing Mask Primer (approx $28, sephora.com) makes a whole lotta sense when you think about getting a facial – and how facialists usually use steam and/or heat to open up your pores and plump your skin, so it can take in more moisture. Maskimizer is formulated to work in the same way, saturating your skin with moisture and prepping it for the mask to follow. Time will tell whether this extra skin care step catches on...

2. Foil masks
Meet the new sheet mask. The first of its kind, Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Concentrated Recovery PowerFoil Mask is a foil-backed anti-ageing treatment designed to drive its formula into the skin 25 times faster than most sheet masks. How? Well, unlike cotton or biocellulose (the materials used for a typical mask), foil is occlusive, which means it lets nothing in or out (in this case, the precious, hyaluronic acid-packed formula). The foil also enables pretty excellent skin care selfies – just sayin’.
3. Splash masks
Hailing from Korea, splash masks are a must-have for the time-poor. Condensing your 20-minute mask ritual into a mere 20 seconds, they help calm and clarify the skin while offering many of the same benefits of a leave-on, wash-off mask. Blithe Splash Masks (approx $62, glowrecipe.com) can be mixed with water and splashed over your complexion for apparently hyper-plumped skin in seconds. Hopefully we’ll see more of these bad boys in Australia, asap!

4. Foaming masks
Another skin care craze from Korea, foaming fizzy face masks bubble up big-time when exposed to oxygen. The foaming action isn’t just aesthetically exciting – it makes the masks work even harder, deeply cleansing away impurities and penetrating the skin with active ingredients. For a less intense fizz, try BABOR SKINOVAGE PX Intensifier Refreshing Foam Mask or Mirenesse Endless Youth Ocean Milk Mousse Mask.
5. Hybrid ‘serumasks’
Multitasking beauty products are nothing new, so it was only a matter of time before a mask was created to do the work of a serum. Darphin Stimulskin Plus Multi-Corrective Divine Serumask (approx $175, darphin.co.uk) is the latest skin care hybrid to hit shelves, claiming to lift and tighten facial contours using potent anti-ageing ingredients. The best part? You can leave the comforting, serumy-cream on overnight – much like the Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Overnight Firming Mask. In case you needed an excuse to get to bed early...

I would like to try the serum mask, sounds like it would be nice. I wouldn't mind trying the foil mask and a mask primer? Like we need an excuse to have more products! Would be interested to read some reviews on these though.

Koreans do face masks like no other, can't beat them for price, quality and equal measures of kooky :) I have tried most of these and love hydrogels, foils in winter and splash masks in summer. Love their rubbery modelling masks too, yet to try bubble masks as I haven't seen one for drier skin yet they all seem to be for oily.

I'm not really looking for face masks anymore I've had a couple over the years to try & there really has been one that I only like but sadly they no longer sell that product & I will never come across any sort of product that would be as good as that very first one I tried a long time ago it was made by Garnier. Basically these one's in this article are all the same there different in some ways but they do the same job. The Garnier one was unique it didn't do any of this crap.

Can't believe I've just read this. The foil mall is interesting but it does not look like it's contoured very well top the face shape.
I think some of these may be rather unnecessary - like mask primer. Best way to prep is clean and exfoliate

That's not the best example they do have better fitting ones than this, there is another mask layer underneath the foil just keeps the essence from drying out and keeps skin warm to help absorb it better. But you can actuallly buy 24kt gold sheet masks but pricey! They almost look like you've gilded your face!

Mask primer? Why not just get a facial. Oh you beauty products, why do you have to be so complicated.

I have never heard of a foil mask or a splash mask, but I am keen to try the serum mask. I multi mask (as in use a hydrating mask or a clay mask once a week), but some of these are new. As a mask is part of my relaxation/pamper time, it is not something I'd be keen to rush, so not sure if a splash mask would be for me...

I don't use lots of face masks as they usually just have a temporary effect. Having said that, I occasionally use a mask that has gentle exfoliating properties.
