The difference between dehydrated skin and dry skin
Dry skin is the same as dehydrated skin, right? Um, nope. However, many find themselves confused about these two skin terms, often because their symptoms – tightness, dullness and flakiness – are very similar.
What is the difference between dry skin and dehydrated skin?
The most notable variance between these two terms is that dry skin is a skin type, and dehydrated skin is a skin condition. It is this difference that dictates how often and how long you suffer from each issue.
What causes dry skin?
Dry skin isn’t actually caused by a lack of water content in the skin; it’s caused by the outer layers of your skin and their inability to maintain normal moisture levels. This damage can be caused by anything from sun damage and overexposure to water to irritating or drying skin care products. This means upping your H2O intake won’t actually improve dry skin – you need to constantly help repair your skin from the outside in order to keep this skin type under control.
What causes dehydrated skin?
Unlike dry skin, dehydrated skin is a condition that’s often temporary and more easily fixed. It can be brought on by a change in season and spending too much time in an air conditioned environment, as well as overly drying skin care products, such as those loaded with alcohol. Oily, blemish-prone skin types are more likely to suffer from dehydration when they’re using oil-stripping skin care products, as well as those whose anti-ageing skin care regimen includes too many active ingredients. So, if you stop using the products causing your skin to feel stripped of its moisturise – and limit exposure to harsh environments – you’ll stop impairing your skin’s function, allowing it to return to its normal, hydrated self.

Both require skin-repairing, hydrating ingredients that will rebuild your skin barrier and boost its ability to hold on to moisture, however, dry skin requires you to use these products on an ongoing basis, while dehydrated skin can divert back to its regular regimen once it’s returned to it’s normal, non-dehydrated state.
